Coyote Dinner Dance
On the first day the road through Hayden Valley was opened in late April, I came across a young coyote hunting for voles or ground squirrels beneath the snow. The wary coyote was very tolerant of my quiet presence and proceeded to hunt for nearly an hour. I burrowed into a snow bank where I could watch without intruding. Her skills were nothing short of amazing. As I watched, she caught about 15 rodents in 16 dives into the snow. This seemed like an unusually large meal, So, I concluded that she was actually just showing off for me.
